Cape Town car hire: ideal for wandering the wine routes

Cape Town car hire is a great choice of transport for travelling Cape Town and surrounds. The Cape is renowned for its vineyards, and meandering along a wine route is a really enjoyable experience, both for wine connoisseurs and teetotallers. Many wine estates now have hotels, spas, restaurants, live music and other activities for guests to enjoy. Renting a car is by far the easiest and most reasonable way to tour the wine routes.

Cape Town car hire: perfect for the Constantia Wine Route

The Constantia wine estates could collectively be termed the “Mother” of the wine industry in the Cape. Vineyards were planted and cultivated in Constantia in the late 1600s and the area has been producing wine ever since. The valley oozes history and heritage and is an upmarket, beautiful place to visit. Cape Town car hire is the best idea for a relaxed tour of the Constantia Wine Route.

Buitenverwachting

Buitenverwachting means “beyond expectations”, and this is exactly the type of wine the estate produces. Buitenverwachting is one of the original Constantia wine farms and today creates a range of wonderful wines. The estate restaurant is also superb.

On-site attractions:

  • Buitenverwachting Restaurant (one of the Cape’s finest restaurants)
  • Picnic in the gardens (picnics are made up on-site and must be pre-booked)

Constantia Uitsig

Constantia Uitsig is a grand old dame of the Constantia Valley, a vineyard that has stood the test of time. The cellar produces sought-after wines, and the estate has developed a hotel, a spa and three restaurants for guests to enjoy. La Colombe is particularly well known.

On-site attractions:

  • Constantia Uitsig Hotel (16 garden rooms)
  • Constantia Uitsig Spa (treatments and therapies)
  • La Colombe Restaurant (internationally recognised restaurant overseen by chef Luke Dale-Roberts)
  • Constantia Uitsig Restaurant
  • The River Café
  • The Wine Shop

Groot Constantia

Groot Constantia is a well known and highly respected cellar that produces premium wines. The lovely estate dates back to 1685 when it was first established as a vineyard. Groot Constantia is a place of much fascinating history, but has “changed with the times” to become the charming estate it is today. Cellar tours take place every hour from 10am to 4pm.

On-site attractions:

  • Simon’s Restaurant (band night on Friday nights and a jazz band on Sunday afternoons from 4:30pm)
  • Jonkershuis Restaurant (with views of False Bay, overseen by chef Laurence Burgess)
  • Vineyard picnics (arrange with Groot Constantia at least 24 hours in advance)

Klein Constantia

Enchanting Klein Constantia is the producer of the famed “Constantia” (now “Vin de Constance”). The dedicated Jooste family run the estate and have been involved in the wine business for generations. The winery produces Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marlbrook, and the legendary “Constantia”, now called “Vin de Constance”.

Steenberg Wines

The Steenberg estate has a top-of-the-range cellar which hosts two tours daily. Both red and white wines are produced, and Steenberg is one of the only Cape vineyards currently cultivating “Nebbiolo”.

The estate is home to a national monument in the form of the original farmhouse as well as some outbuildings, which have now become part of the 24-suite hotel. The farmhouse gable is the last remaining example of its kind in the Cape Peninsula.

On-site attractions:

  • The restaurant, Catharina’s, offers wonderful views of False Bay, the Steenberg mountains and the vineyards.
  • An added bonus is the championship 18 hole golf course, developed with the best interests of the local environment in mind.

Eagles Nest

Eagles Nest specialises in production of two red wines; a shiraz and a merlot, and is the steepest commercially farmed land in the Cape. Vineyards are grown from 150m-400m above sea level. Visits are by appointment only.

The glorious scenery and quaffable wines of the Constantia Wine Route are 20 minutes from the city centre. Choose Cape Town car hire for a tour to remember!
